Imagine transforming your entire home into a breathtaking, immersive work of art! That's precisely what Devon artist Emily Powell has achieved, turning her family's terraced house into a vibrant, living canvas. This isn't just a house; it's The Art of the Living.
Powell, known for her colorful and energetic paintings, began this extraordinary project a decade ago. She 'suddenly let loose,' as she puts it, hand-painting everything from the light switches to the fridge and even the toilet. Every room is a carefully curated experience, designed to evoke specific emotions through color and imagery.
Her Brixham home recently opened its doors to a limited number of ticketholders, offering a unique experience far removed from the typical gallery visit. Think of it as stepping into a dream. Visitors are greeted by a circus of animals in party hats in the playroom, Dutch-inspired art on the kitchen walls, and a fig tree adorning the hallway ceiling. Birds seem to take flight up the stairs, and the paintings flow seamlessly from one room to the next, creating a truly immersive environment.
Powell's artistic journey includes two solo shows at London's Portland Gallery and a talk at the Royal Academy of Arts. Her work has also been displayed locally, including pieces from her residency in the Isles of Scilly and paintings inspired by the Arctic. This isn't just a hobby; it's a dedicated artistic practice.
"It started off as just trying out things in the new house that I'd bought," Powell explains. "It grew and grew and grew and now it's out of hand." The transformation began when the family moved into their first home after renting. The freedom to experiment led to this incredible artistic explosion.
But here's where it gets controversial... While the house is a visual feast, it does come with its challenges. As her husband, Jack Powell, points out, the painted floors sometimes make it difficult to spot their daughter's toys. And, let's face it, paint on everything is a real possibility! "I don't think there's an item of clothing that doesn't have paint on it," he admits.
The open house, which ends on December 7th, is completely sold out, with a waiting list of 500 people! Visitors have traveled from as far as the United States to witness this unique creation. Powell has now run out of surfaces to paint in this house, so she plans to sell and embark on a new chapter of her artistic journey.
