The stage is set for an exciting four-day swimfest!

The 2025 Swim England National Winter Championships commenced today at the iconic Ponds Forge International Sports Centre, Sheffield. Fresh off the European Short Course Championships, this event promises an action-packed weekend.

Day One Recap: Stars Rise to the Top

One of the standout performers on day one was Eva Okaro, a University of Texas swimmer and Olympian. At just 19 years old, Okaro dominated the women's 100m freestyle, clocking an impressive 51.74. Her split times of 25.04 and 26.70 showcased her speed and endurance.

But here's where it gets controversial... Okaro's time was only the third fastest of her career, with her personal best at 51.48. This raises the question: is Okaro saving her best for later in the meet, or is there more to uncover about her strategy?

In the women's 100m freestyle, Harriet Rogers took silver with a time of 53.27, while Kate Clifton from Sheffield claimed bronze in 53.91.

The men's 50m butterfly saw Josh Gammon, a 22-year-old from Bath, soar to victory with a time of 22.19. His teammate, Jacob Peters, settled for silver in 22.42, while Jamie Ingram from Manchester rounded out the podium in 22.74.

And this is the part most people miss... Gammon's effort not only secured him the win but also placed him as the third-fastest British performer of all time in this event. An impressive feat for a young swimmer!

In the 200m IM, 16-year-old Amalie Smith shone brightly, registering her fastest time ever and claiming gold. Her time of 2:07.83 not only improved upon her previous PB but also tied her with Leah Schlosshan as the ninth-best British performer of all time. Schlosshan, who also competed tonight, finished as runner-up with a time of 2:08.03.

Cameron Brooker, a 23-year-old standout from Bath Performance Centre, made waves in the men's 200m back, setting a new national record with a lifetime best of 1:48.36. He outswam Olympic medalist Luke Greenbank, who finished second in 1:48.91. European SC Championships competitor Jack Skerry of Bath took third place with a time of 1:51.92.

Additional Notes:

  • Lucy Fox dominated the women's 800m free, winning gold with a time of 8:23.87, nearly six seconds ahead of her competitors.
  • Max Morgan from Reed's secured the top spot in the men's 100m breast, the only swimmer to break the 58-second barrier with a time of 57.84.
  • Imogen Clark, the national record holder, topped the women's 100m breast podium with a time of 1:05.99.
