Gen Z's Cooking Confidence: High Ratings, Fewer Recipes | Cooking Trends (2025)

Here’s a surprising twist: Gen Z believes they’re culinary superstars, but many struggle to cook a meal without a recipe. Yes, you read that right. Despite ranking their cooking skills higher than any other generation, Gen Z knows the fewest recipes from scratch. But here’s where it gets even more intriguing—a poll of 2,000 adults revealed that while the average person can cook 14 dishes with a recipe and nine without, Gen Z lags behind with just 10 and five, respectively. Millennials aren’t far ahead, with 12 and seven. So, what’s going on here?

A spokesperson for the durable pan brand Circulon pointed out a fascinating disconnect: Brits might be overestimating their kitchen prowess. You’d think knowing more recipes would translate to higher self-confidence, right? But it seems confidence is more about perception than actual skill. When asked to rate their cooking abilities, a whopping 18% of Gen Z labeled themselves ‘excellent,’ compared to just 7% of Gen X and 5% of Boomers. Bold claim, but do the numbers back it up?

And this is the part most people miss—the dishes everyone feels confident making are often the simplest: jacket potatoes, omelettes, and scrambled eggs on toast. Meanwhile, the meals people wish they could master—homemade bread, Indian curry, or beef wellington—remain out of reach for many. Yet, despite these lofty goals, half of us stick to the same meals week after week. Gen Z, in particular, is guilty of this, with 42% cooking the same dish multiple times a week.

But here’s the controversial part: Is Gen Z’s reliance on meal kits, fitness goals, and social media trends holding them back? While Boomers prioritize using up ingredients (60%), Gen Z and Millennials are swayed by kitchen gadgets (19%), fitness goals (20-23%), and meal kits (11-12%). Even their inspiration differs—25% of Gen Z follows social media trends, while Gen X and Boomers stick to trusty cookbooks (33% and 30%, respectively).

Despite their confidence, Gen Z and Millennials are eager to improve, eyeing innovative tools like all-in-one pans or multicookers. But here’s the kicker: 77% of all generations have experienced a kitchen disaster that left them scarred. From burning food to missing ingredients mid-recipe, these mishaps are universal. And let’s not forget the 43% who worry about non-stick coatings flaking into their meals—a concern that Circulon argues stifles creativity.

So, here’s the question for you: Is Gen Z’s self-assuredness in the kitchen justified, or are they overestimating their skills? And more importantly, how can we bridge the gap between confidence and actual ability? Let’s spark a debate—share your thoughts below!
