In a session titled 'Hydrogen, Beyond Mobility, New Energy for Society,' Hyundai Motor Group Vice Chair and Hydrogen Council Co-Chair, Jaehoon Chang, alongside Hydrogen Council CEO Ivana Jemelkova, engaged in a thought-provoking discussion on hydrogen's transformative potential. The APEC CEO Summit, themed 'Bridge, Business and Beyond,' gathered global leaders to tackle pressing issues like regional integration, digital transformation, and sustainability.
Chang highlighted hydrogen's dual role: as a catalyst for carbon neutrality and a strategic energy carrier. He emphasized how hydrogen addresses the intermittency of renewable energy sources, enhances energy resilience, and enables decentralized systems like off-grid and microgrid ecosystems. 'Hydrogen isn't just about powering vehicles,' Chang explained, 'it's about reshaping how we generate, distribute, and consume energy, making communities more self-sufficient.'
And this is the part most people miss: Hyundai Motor Group isn't just talking the talk—they're walking the walk. With nearly 30 years of leadership in hydrogen technology, the Group is driving the entire value chain, from production and storage to utilization. Their efforts are backed by the Global Hydrogen Compass 2025, which reveals a staggering $110 billion in committed investments across 510 projects globally, marking a shift from ambition to action.
But is this enough? Jemelkova pointed out that while capital commitments have grown tenfold since 2020, the next challenge lies in creating demand. 'Clear policies and strong public-private collaboration are critical,' she stated. Hyundai Motor Group is stepping up, leading initiatives to both drive demand and secure supply across the hydrogen ecosystem. 'Building this ecosystem requires collective effort,' Chang added, 'no single company can do it alone.'
