Maidstone Water Crisis: Thousands Affected by Disruption - What’s Happening? (2026)

Imagine waking up to find your taps dry, with no water to start your day. This is the harsh reality for thousands of residents in Maidstone, who are facing a weekend of uncertainty due to widespread water disruption. But here's where it gets even more frustrating: the issue isn't just a simple fix—it's a complex web of operational challenges, weather extremes, and infrastructure strains that have left many without this essential resource.

By Nathan Bevan, South East

The crisis began when South East Water (SEW) announced that customers in areas from Hollingbourne to Headcorn and surrounding villages were experiencing water outages due to 'operational issues' at Southern Water. These issues have been compounded by the recent arrival of Storm Goretti, which has disrupted water treatment processes and exacerbated the situation. For those affected, the disruption started as early as Saturday morning, leaving households and businesses scrambling to cope.

And this is the part most people miss: Maidstone Borough Council has issued a strict advisory, stating that food businesses without running water 'must close' to maintain hygiene standards. This adds another layer of inconvenience, impacting not just residents but local economies as well.

Steve Andrews, incident manager for South East Water, explained that the problem stems from Southern Water's inability to pump its usual 20 million litres of treated water daily to the affected areas. 'This supply has been temporarily turned off,' he said, adding that storage reservoirs are now running low as a result. SEW is working tirelessly to mitigate the crisis by moving water from other parts of its network and using tankers to inject water directly into the system.

To support those in need, SEW has set up a bottled water station at Headcorn Aerodrome and is prioritizing deliveries to vulnerable customers. However, the challenges don't end there. Earlier this week, a series of burst water mains on SEW's network, coupled with freeze/thaw conditions across Kent, further strained the system. Storm Goretti's impact on water treatment rates and river water quality has only added to the turmoil.

Here's the controversial part: While SEW has acknowledged the severity of the situation, some residents are questioning whether more could have been done to prevent such widespread disruption. The company expects water levels to stabilize by 13 January, but for now, customers are advised to expect normal flow in the mornings and no water in the afternoons and evenings. This unpredictable pattern has left many, like Tunbridge Wells MP Mike Martin, feeling frustrated and unable to plan their daily lives.

A SEW spokesperson admitted, 'This is not the level of service we want to provide, but we believe this is the quickest way to return water supplies to normal.' Yet, the question remains: could better infrastructure or preparedness have avoided this crisis? We'd love to hear your thoughts—do you think water companies are doing enough to safeguard our essential supplies, or is more accountability needed? Share your opinions in the comments below.
