COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) - The buyout in Texas A&M athletic director Trev Alberts’ contract, should Alberts decide to leave his post before the end of the contract in 2029, will reduce by 50% upon the resignation of university president Mark Welsh, according to the contract obtained by KBTX via open records request.
The A&M University System announced Welsh will step down from his role Friday at 5 p.m. after nearly two weeks of some conservative Texans calling for the president’s firing due to a video that went viral of a disagreement that led to a professors firing.
Should Alberts elect to leave his position prior to April 1, 2026, his contract stipulates he would owe the university $4 million. The buyout reduces $1 million each year of his contract.
After Welsh’s departure at close of business Friday, Alberts’ buyout will become $2 million, according to his contract. Should Alberts decide to leave, that payment is due within 30 days of his written notice of departure.
Welsh hired Alberts as A&M’s athletic director in March of 2024, praising Alberts’ business acumen.
“With Trev’s expertise, the Aggies are poised to not only excel on the fields, tracks and courts, but also successfully navigate the multi-faceted intersection of sports, commerce and student-athlete empowerment,” Welsh said in a statement at the time. “He has a profound understanding of the intricate business of athletics and the evolving landscape of college athletics, particularly in the realm of Name, Image and Likeness (NIL).”
Alberts released a statement through a spokesperson Thursday evening on the departure of Welsh from the presidency.
“I am sorry to hear about the resignation of General Welsh,” Alberts said in the statement. “I am grateful for the opportunity that he gave me to become a part of the Aggie family. I appreciated his support of our student-athletes and coaches. We wish Mark and his wife Betty the very best.”
